The New Vic was transformed into a local public house in the latest play to hit the venue as ‘The Last Quiz Night On Earth’ opened for an extended run last week.
As a massive meteor hurtles towards Earth, Kathy, the eccentric landlady of The Four Horsemen is determined to host the best (and last!) quiz night in the pub’s history. As her quizmaster extraordinaire makes final preparations, a lively group of regulars gather for one final round.
Written by Alison Carr, this unique four hander becomes very interactive as the audience soon realise that they too are patrons of the pub and here for the quiz. With clipboards distributed before you enter the auditorium (make sure you pick one up!) there are five rounds of questions to answer. It’s an exciting format and one which brings you closer to the story and the action, being part of the events unfolding on stage.
Lisa Gorgin plays landlady Kathy, her character warm and welcoming, putting a brave face on the impending doom. Ayan Philip is quizmaster Rav, the host with the most. Pria Kalsi is the eccentric but lovable Fran and Sam Redford is reluctant patron Bobby.
The cast all put in a great performance, both individually and collectively. The drama and comedy flow naturally and the audience become invested in the storyline, which is down to the great character acting and evident chemistry between the quartet.
The production shines a light on issues such as family, friendship, regret and reunion. It shows that it does not matter how extravagant or trivial an activity is, it’s who you choose to spend your time with which is important.
Hat’s off also to a fantastically decorated set. The little attention to details add a wonderful touch, including the customary jar of pickled eggs as well as the front row having a set of tables adorned with beer mats in front of them.
It’s a unique take on audience participation and inclusion which pays off to make a thoroughly entertaining production.
The production is on until 1st March, with several matinee performances. Tickets are available from the box office or online here: https://www.newvictheatre.org.uk/productions/the-last-quiz-night-on-earth/
