Review: Eric’s Italian Job

David Graham returns to the New Vic with his new show ‘Eric’s Italian Job’.

The New Vic favourite finds himself witness to the Great Train Robbery. Able to identify two of the perpetrators of the heist after bearing accidental witness to the getaway, he is enlisted by Scotland Yard to travel with them to Turin, believed to be the location of the gangs’ next job. Cue a plotline which is sure to find Eric in the midst of high farce and many laughs.

As with any ‘Eric’ production, the quality of the production and the music was fantastic. All cast multi-talented, singing, playing instruments and acting. The musical choices were spot on with ‘get up and dance numbers’ as well as some slower numbers, including a marvellous rendition of ‘You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me’ by Carly Cook

Alan Howell continues his Eric run with great vocals, lead guitar and his acting and gait, a touch of the ‘Michael Caine’s’ as well as Kenny Davies contributing a strong vocal performance and hilarity as the dim-witted robber.

Carly Cook was fantastic again with a brilliant vocal performance and was funny as Mrs. Maserati the hotel owner. Harvey James added to the list of top vocals on show tonight including ‘Volare’ to open the second half. Notwithstanding Georgia Gagen who ably played Julie as well as performed solo vocals.

David Lonsdale returned as ‘Gordon Bennett’ a crowd favourite, responsible for hilarity with a wide range of facial expressions and the odd malapropism. Finally, David Graham himself who was, as always, the ever present anchor on the ‘Eric’ ship.

It was so great to see so many families enjoying this show together, it is one that definitely spans its appeal across generations with children, parents and grandparents coming together as a family to enjoy the quality music and the comedy.

Long before it came to an end, everyone was on their feet, dancing, singing and enjoying the evening together as a collective.

It is a formula that works really well and long may it continue. Dont forget to pick up your sheet in the auditorium as David and the cast are giving the audience a chance to pick their favourite Eric production to see again next year to celebrate their 25th Anniversary, a remarkable, but much deserved achievement.

Eric’s Italian Job is on until 2nd September and tickets are available here: https://www.newvictheatre.org.uk/productions/erics-italian-job/
