Revamped Godber Play ‘Shakers’ Comes To New Vic

The double BAFTA-winning partnership of John Godber and Jane Thornton bring Shakers bang up-to-date in this revitalized version of the iconic play which puts women’s lives front and centre, as everyone returns to going ‘out out’.

The sister play to John Godber’s smash hit BouncersShakers: Under New Management, written by John Godber and Jane Thornton and directed by John Godber, will be performed at the New Vic from Tuesday 25 to Saturday 29 October.

The high street might be struggling to get back to normal but the Shakers bar is ‘under new management’ and they are determined to make it the place to be seen. Pubs are closing, gin bars are so yesterday, and cocktails and decadence are back for the roaring 2020s, as the hospitality industry looks to a new future.

Misogyny is rife, in the home, in the workplace, and on the streets. The walk home after closing feels longer than ever, the customers are getting more leering, the hours longer, but the pay hasn’t changed. For waitresses Adele, Nicky and Mel, their lives juggle home, work, school and everything in between, but how long can it be maintained?

The cast includes Midlands-born Yasmin Dawes (May Queen, Belgrade Theatre Coventry) as Nicky, Jazmine Franks (Channel 4’s Hollyoaks) as Adele and Rebecca Tebbett (BBC One’s Call The Midwife) as Mel.

Funny, physical and fizzing with wit, Shakers from the John Godber Company and Theatre Royal Wakefield at the New Vic might just be the bar that we all want to be seen in!

Shakers will take to the stage at theNew Vic from Tuesday 25 to Saturday 29 October 2022. For more information and to book call the Box Office on 01782 717 962 or visit newvictheatre.org.uk.
