Sustainable Theatre Experiment Comes to Life at New Vic with Help from Local Cyclists

The New Vic team up with Headlong Theatre Company and the Barbican as part of a ground-breaking international theatre experiment this June.

Newcastle Tri Club and local singers will join Danielle Henry (Playhouse Creatures, Queens of The Coal Age, Votes for Women) in A Play for the Living in a Time of Extinction, an innovative one-woman show powered entirely by bicycles.

On the New Vic’s stage from Monday 19 to Saturday 24 June, this is the first tour of its kind in the UK and sees a play tour the country while the people do not. Directed by Eleanor Taylor (Around the World in 80 Days, Treasure Island) and brought to life by the New Vic’s resident creative team, this is a timely play that takes audiences on a life-changing journey to confront the urgent ecological disaster unfolding around us.

This moving exploration of what it means to be human in an era of man-made extinction sees the New Vic partner with the Barbican’s Katie Mitchell and Headlong, as part of an experiment reimagining theatre in a climate crisis.

Director Eleanor Taylor said: “Sharing this deeply moving and genuinely funny story, in such a uniquely sustainable way, is a real privilege – it’s not every day we power a whole show by bike! As well as being a technically challenging and innovative show, A Play for The Living in a Time of Extinction also welcomes New Vic Theatre audiences into a shared space where, together, we can explore the future of our shared world.”
